Whole Numbers

How:
5 + 5 + 3 = 13

Why: Each group has the same number of stars, so we can count the groups in fives and then count on the rest.

Addition and Subtraction

Sample question

There are 8 apples in 2 baskets. One has 5. How many apples are in the other?

How:
5 and 3 make 8.
8 − 5 = 3

Why: The two parts together make 8, so the missing part is what is left after 5.

Multiplication and Division

  • Multiply by adding equal groups
  • Share and group equally

Sample question

There are 3 plates. Each has 5 apples. How many apples are there in all?
3 groups: 5 apples; 5 apples; 5 apples.

How:
5 + 5 + 5 = 15

Why: Every plates has the same number, so we add 5 once for each of the 3 plates.

Money

Length

How long is the pencil?

How:
It starts at 0 and ends at 9.
So it is 9 cm long.

Why: When an object starts at 0, the number at its end is its length.

Time

What time does the clock show?
A clock: the hour hand is between 4 and 5; the minute hand points at 7.123456789101112

How:
The short hand is just past 4.
The long hand points to 7: 7 fives = 35 minutes.
The time is 4.35.

Why: The short hand moves slowly from one number to the next in an hour, so the hour is the number it has just passed.

How:
4 straight sides, 4 corners. The opposite sides are equal, but it is longer than it is tall: a rectangle.

Why: Each shape has its own number of sides and corners, and its own kind of sides.
